MASDANZA

The International Contemporary Dance Festival of the Canary Islands, MASDANZA, was born in Gran Canaria, in 1996. It is the result of the initiative of its Director from the very beginning, Natalia Medina, with the support of the Department of Culture of the Municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana. The Department recognised and supported this initiative, with the intention of covering an important cultural space that had not been included previously in the agenda of any public or private institution in the Canaries.

Since its first beginnings in 1996, MASDANZA has consolidated itself year after year, going from a small regional festival, to national by the second, and then on to international from its sixth edition until now, spreading beyond our national borders and open to the participation of international choreographers and dancers.

MASDANZA has grown as an event that every year acquires more strength and prestige outside the borders of our community, allowing the public to see that there are important cultural alternatives when visiting Gran Canaria. The most convincing evidence of this fact is the increasing number of public attending every edition of the Festival. Thanks to their interest in discovering new creators and trends, this Festival has become a leader in the national and international arenas.

In the beginning, the audiences were formed by dance professionals and people with a very keen interest in dance, however, year after year, we have been able to attract the interest of the general public, therefore awakening their interest in discovering a new form of artistic expression which until now seemed destined for a select minority.

Our Organisation´s commitment to offering our audiences the best in dance, leads us to invite Dance Companies of recognised prestige to perform during the Opening Ceremony and at different events during the Festival, performing their latest productions.

Parallel to the competition, during the week, there are many activities: Guest Companies, Break-Dance Championship, Masdanza Showcase, Dance Marathon, Exhibitions, Dance In Open Spaces, Conferences, workshops and courses.

It is important to mention also, that the Organisation is sensitive to the difficulty that new creators have in obtaining a place in the professional world, that is why it guarantees the winners with participation in important circuits and national and international dance spaces. At the same time, MASDANZA also awards grants to outstanding performers.

After 14 years, we can say that MASDANZA is a platform for the launching of new local, national and international creators. And because of the geographical location of our archipielago, events like MASDANZAprove the TRANSCONTINENTALITY of the Canary Islands, with people travelling back and forth from Latin America, Africa and Europe.

MASDANZA is an international showcase for the Canary Islands, which for a few days become the neuralgical center of the world’s dance avant-garde, and an unprecedented reference in our community.

National General Strike planned for the 29th September in Spain / Canaries

As you may already know on 29.09.10 there is a general strike planned in Spain. Many comments have been made in the News and currently on this date there will be minimum compulsory services in transport, hospitals, etc… Latest news is that only 20% of the European flights will be allowed in the Spanish territory. Please contact your flight provider in order to confirm / check your flight detail has not been cancelled.

As a result airport transfers are not guaranteed at all on this day. There is currently no easy solution as even regular taxis are not guaranteed.

We therefore recommend that your transfer departure dates are amended to 28.09.10 or 30.09.10 to avoid this strike action.

The cooler summer in Europe

Gran Canaria enjoys a spring climate all year round with average annual temperatures that fluctuate between 18 and 25 degrees centigrade. Indeed, the international scientific community recognises this as one of the cities with the best climate in the world - a thorough study conducted by the University of Siracusa led the US newspaper, USA Today, to highlight Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, one of the cities with the best climate in the world.

However, the unusual relief of the island has given rise to a great variety of microclimates within Gran Canaria. While the climate is dry and sunny almost all year round in the coastal regions, particularly in the south, as you move up to higher altitudes the influence of the sea is reduced and the clouds are retained by the mountains. This produces great variations in temperature from the temperate zones of the lower regions or valleys and subtropical forests to the highest zones where the temperature can fall to 0 ºC. It's not too unusual for people to go sunbathing and swimming on the beach and then to find themselves playing around in the snow on the mountain tops just one hour's drive later.

The sea is equally as warm with temperatures fluctuating between 18 ºC in the winter months and 22 ºC during the rest of the year. This, together with the estimated annual rate of 2,700 hours of sunlight in Gran Canaria allow you to make the most of the day, whether you are on the beach, playing a sport, on a day trip or enjoying an outdoor activity.

People often mistakenly think that if the winter is so warm on the islands then the summer must be overwhelming, but this couldn't be further from the truth. The summer in the Canary Islands is softened by the trade winds that refresh the archipelago serving it with pleasant mild summers with an average temperature of 24 ºC.

Hello everyone, we're at Maspalomas Carnival, the biggest street party of a tourist resort.

Swiss Triatlon Team

Transgrancanaria 2010, 5, 6 and 7 March

“TRANSGRANCANARIA” is the name of a test that has been held on the island of Gran Canaria since October 2003. In the "TRANSGRANCANARIA", participants must cross the island of Gran Canaria on foot and for that we are being supported by the organization that provides for them several points as supplies with food and drink appropriate to this type of evidence, moreover, Arista, an organizer of the event, offering health coverage along the route.

Transgrancanaria: DISTANCE: 123KM Elevation: +4800 M The first edition of "TRANSGRANCANARIA", in October 2003, had a total of 65 participants. Currently registrations are closed at 500 participants to be able to cover all the riders from all over the world. Athletes and hikers, nature lovers in general who decide to spend a day differently and raised the challenge of crossing the island in less than 30 hours.

On this tour participants can be found in rain, sun, mud, dust ... but above all with nature and the possibility to enjoy the direct contact with her. The "TRANSGRANCANARIA" is the first event of its kind being held in the islands. Arista, an organizer of the test is aimed, first place in the national calendar event as mandatory for all mountain lovers, the cross, triathlon, the raids and adventure in general. The Transgrancanaria not intended as a test exclusively elitist, but an event where accommodate all types of players, that's why we will have 30 hours to do, considering that the first participant will end in a day and will last night on the road and come along for the second which enabled several control points of passage for the safety and comfort of the riders in such a prolonged effort.

Sports in Gran Canaria

We had this weekend a fabolous sports weekend,the marathon and the medium marathon in Las Palmas de GC, a really nice experience to be repeted next year. The male winner was the Ethiopian James Kipkosgei Kutto with a total time of 2 hours, 17 min. The female wiiner was Ture Chatumoha with the total time of 2 hours and 40 min.
